Online monitoring of elite performances
“Getting the “moments” in a competition heat right, is the key to global success”
Martin can watch surfers compete in WSL events and report on their performances . This is all done online, through watching event broadcasts, making this service accessible and effective for any elite surfer competing worldwide. Performance areas that are reported on include:
- A surfer’s on-wave performances, and how better scores could be achieved
- A surfer’s technique – if there are inconsistencies in their performances
- A surfer’s wave selection – and the rhythm of that selection throughout the heat
- A surfer’s use of priority – was it used effectively throughout the heat
- A surfer’s decisions and strategy used throughout the heat
Often, it’s a single “moment” or instance in a heat that decides the outcome in elite competition. Getting these “moments” right on a consistent basis is the real key to winning. Monitoring performances as surfers travel around the tour, can provide awareness of their performances often available no where else. This service was developed and perfected through working with elite surfers Nikki van Dyke and Connor O’Leary as they competed on the world professional tour during the years – 2014 to 2016.
In this time Nikki consistently won on the WQS tour, and has re-qualified for the WSL elite women’s tour each year. Connor has rapidly risen through the global rankings and won the men’s WQS series in 2016, making him the no 1 ranked WQS surfer debuting on the elite WSL men’s tour in 2017. Working with Nikki and Connor during this time, every heat they surfed was reported upon and discussed, with key concepts explained through the creation of training videos that they could view before surfing, keeping them focused on highlighted skills when travelling around the tour.
